Google Disavow Links is one of the most awaited and talked about features since the Penguin update came out. Before I talk about this add-on from Google's webmaster team, let's go back in time.
In April 2012 when Google released Google Penguin, a major update after changing the Panda algorithm, it broke into the world of SEO blogging and cleaned up spam links from private blogging networks.
Since Penguin was created to punish any site that uses spam methods to create backlinks and manipulate search engine rankings, people have started abusing this system by spamming links to legitimate sites, in an attempt to lower their rankings. Some succeeded.
Many brands were affected by the negative SEO campaign, although others were not. All of this has led to a major problem with controlling backlinks pointing to the site.
A similar Google disavow tool has been highly anticipated to help site owners disavow spam backlinks, and today Matt Cutts announced the launch of the Google Webmaster Disavow links tool.
What is the Google Disavow Link Tool?
If you understand the concept of negative SEO, then you know that negative SEO is the dark side of SEO, especially since Google has made it clear that it will penalize sites involved in any spammy link.
A person can go to a site like Fiverr and use these aggregate link building services to generate 10,000 to 20,000 links within a period of one or two days, thus it can negatively affect the search engine ranking of any website.
Your site may not necessarily be harmed by this spammy link, but a well-planned SEO attack can bring down your site's ranking completely.
How can a webmaster control this spam link?
In the past, there was no direct and easy way to control such a spam link except to send an email to the webmaster asking him to remove the links. However, when these links are generated for the purpose of generating spam, in most cases you will not be able to reach the webmaster, or your request will not be considered.
Google Disavow Links tool is Google's attempt to give authority to webmasters to report such links and submit them to Google and help disavow those backlinks, and if they are hit by negative SEO or any Penguin update, it helps them get out quickly from that.
Technically, Google detects spam links and spam sites by default, so in most cases, these links won't harm your site's performance. However, many sites have been affected by spam links, and the number is increasing with every update and update of Penguin data.

The hardest part of the process is creating a list of spam or malicious links that you wish to disavow. You can use the Google Search Console tool to download a list of spammy backlinks pointing to your site.
You can also use any third party backlink checking tool, my favorites are SEMRUSH & Ahrefs or even MOZ which not only monitors old links but also lets you see a list of all new and dead links.

If you want to ignore an entire domain that is sending too many spammy links to your site, you can simply use domain: example.com in this text file to ignore links from the entire domain.
Once your list is ready, simply go to the Google Disavow Links page, select your domain from the dropdown list, and click Load List of Links you created in the previous step.
Click upload and submit, and that's it. You have successfully reported all spam links to Google! You will also receive a confirmation email once the file has been uploaded.
When you want to add new links to the Disavow link text file, Google gives you the option to download and add or remove links from the existing file. To see the effect of the uploaded file, it can take up to 1-2 weeks, as Google will re-index and re-crawl these pages.
